The Líderes binational service-learning program will truly close the gap of understanding between our two countries by uniting leaders and organizations that have a passion for both sides of the border. Together, students from the United States and Mexico will demonstrate the importance of building relationships and binational cooperation.
Mission
Lay the groundwork for university students to establish a foundation of binational awareness based upon experience, knowledge, and socially-responsible citizenship.
Objectives
- Facilitate cooperative learning between future leaders who possess the talent and ability to implement sustainable change between the U.S. and Mexico.
- In conjunction with university partners, implement projects that meet the service needs of communities (as identified by the communities themselves) and the learning needs of the Líderes students.
- Create and enhance binational networks of individuals and organizational entities that have a passion for both sides of the border, to include: universities, governmental and non-governmental organizations, communities, businesses, the general public, and private entities.
In conjunction with universities from Mexico and the United States, The MATT Foundation is developing Líderes- a New Generation , a binational service-learning pilot program uniting U.S. and Mexican undergraduate students who will work on developmental projects in Mexico during the summer of 2011.
The program is organized in five sectors:
- Agriculture
- Business Development
- Education
- Environment
- Public Health
During those six weeks, students will reside and work in Mexican communities where they will have the opportunity to:
- Enjoy a unique guided learning process led by experts and researchers in their field of study
- Acquire valuable cross-cultural experience working in bilingual-bicultural settings
- Be part of the project development process by working hand-in hand with community leaders and academic professionals
- Be part of a network of binational leaders
- Apply their knowledge to solve real, everyday situations
- Experience local traditions and customs in Mexican communities
An internet portal will be created and designed specifically for the Líderes- a New Generation pilot program where students, experts, organizations, and members will be able to upload, share, and view each other’s material. It will serve as a reference point for program information and students’ achievements.
